This Month in Civil War History...April

Battle of Shiloh (April 6–7, 1862)

Fought in Tennessee, this was one of the war’s bloodiest battles up to that point. Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant secured a costly but crucial victory.


Fall of New Orleans (April 25, 1862)

Union Admiral David Farragut captured the South’s largest city, New Orleans.


Battle of Pleasant Hill (April 9, 1864)
A key battle in the Red River Campaign in Louisiana. Union forces claimed victory, but the campaign failed to meet strategic goals.
